Copy of Michelangelo's David in Florence

Copy of Michelangelo's David in Florence

Experience Florence, the epicenter of the Renaissance art period, on this full-day, 13-hour bus and walking tour. You will walk Florence's Medieval streets - the same ones renowned artists Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and Botticelli walked - and sample the city's ample artistic offerings and visit craftsmen's workshops and magnificent cathedrals.

Depart Rome and head north to Florence. Your Florence city tour begins with a visit to the Academy Museum of Art, home to Michelangelo's masterpiece statue, "The David." You will continue the tour on foot with a local guide to visit the Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore, the cathedral church of Florence. The cathedral complex also includes the Baptistry and Giotto's Campanile.

The tour continues to Piazza della Signoria, the L-shaped city square that makes up the heart of Florence. The square features many statues by Michelangelo, Bartolomeo Ammannati and Donatello. Your tour includes a lunch at a typical Florentine restaurant following the visit to Piazza della Signoria.

Conclude the tour with visits to a leather shop and those of local goldsmiths and other traditional craftsmen.

NOTE: You MUST wear appropriate attire to enter churches on this tour. No shorts, miniskirts or uncovered shoulders are allowed.

Tour Itinerary

Depart Rome and head north. En route to Florence, located on the Arno River banks, you will cross the lovely Tiber and Chianti region valleys. Your Florence city tour begins with a visit to the Academy Museum of Art, home to Michelangelo's masterpiece statue, "The David." The museum features works dating back to the 14th century.

You will continue the tour on foot with a local guide to visit the Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore, the cathedral church of Florence. The Gothic style church's construction began in 1296 and wasn't completed until 1436. The dome is the largest brick dome ever constructed. The cathedral complex also includes the Baptistry and Giotto's Campanile. The Baptistry is a smaller basilica known for its sculpted bronze doors (Michelangelo dubbed them the "Gates of Paradise" because of their beauty). Giotto's Campanile is a free-standing bell tower that is nearly 280-feet high.

The tour continues to Piazza della Signoria, the L-shaped city square that makes up the heart of Florence. The square features many statues, including a copy of Michelangelo's "The David"; the Fountain of Neptune by Bartolomeo Ammannati; and "Judith and Holfernes" by Donatello. Your tour includes a lunch at a typical Florentine restaurant following the visit to Piazza della Signoria.

Conclude the tour with visits to a leather shop and those of local goldsmiths and other traditional craftsmen.

This tour does not operate on December 25 and January 1.
